Ella Mae Smith

Ella Mae Smith is an African American artist, born in 1958 and creatively gifted from the very beginning. She often says she “took her first breath and started making art,” a truth reflected in the depth and authenticity of everything she creates. As a U.S. Army veteran, Ella Mae carries the strength, discipline, and resilience of her service into her artistic practice, channeling emotion into powerful visual stories.

Her style blends soulful realism with expressive boldness—art that feels alive, intentional, and deeply human. Recently refining her skills in watercolor, Ella Mae continues to evolve, pushing her work to new levels of detail, movement, and emotional warmth.

Art has always been Ella Mae’s form of healing and expression. After decades of creating for herself and those she loves, she is now embracing her journey as a professional artist. She is especially passionate about reaching female veterans through note cards, journals, and coloring pages that honor their experiences. At the same time, she is developing a masculine line for men—veterans and civilians alike—who resonate with her storytelling, texture, and emotional clarity.

Ella Mae’s work invites you to pause, feel, and reflect. Her art is not simply seen—it is experienced.

Client Testimonials

“The boots painting stopped me in my tracks. It carries a strength and tenderness that only someone who has lived the story could capture. The detail, the emotion, the quiet resilience woven into every stroke — it feels like a tribute, a memory, and a prayer all at once. This piece doesn’t just show a pair of boots; it holds a journey. It honors every step taken, every sacrifice made, and every woman who has ever worn them with purpose. I will never look at military service, or art, the same way again.”
L.D. Brown
“When I first saw this painting, the phrase ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ immediately came to mind. There’s something powerful and deeply human about the way these boots are portrayed — worn, steady, and full of untold stories. You don’t have to be a veteran to feel the weight of the journey they represent. The artwork invites you to pause, reflect, and honor the strength and experiences carried by others. It’s a reminder that everyone has a path, and every step matters.”
